Stuck in Austin

Posted on 01 December 2007 by SonHouse

Well, I was all excited earlier today as my trip to PPC Classroom Live in Vegas is finally here.  My flight out of Austin was scheduled to depart at 9:50pm tonight which would have put me in Vegas by 10:45pm local time.  After going through a speedy security check, I was the only one there, and a short walk to the gate, I found out the flight was delayed a few hours due to weather in Vegas.

No big deal, I just opened up the laptop and got to work.  After a few hours, the departure time was changed to 12:30am.  Oh well, as long as we get there, I’m getting a lot done anyway.  At 12am they announced the flight was cancelled.  Shit!  Now it’s too late to get my wife to come pick me up, I live about 30 minutes from the airport and have an 18 month old son at home.  So, I bite the bullet, book my flight for 6am and basically bunker down in the airport for the 6 hour wait till mornin’.  I can check in again at 4:30am, so I figure I’ve waited this long, what’s another 4 to 6 hours, right?

So, here I am, it’s 2:33am to be exact.  I decided to post about this little experience.  I’ve never really spent the entire night in an airport.  It’s quite the experience I must say.  The gate area is off limits from 2am to 4:30am, all the stores are closed so no food or drink.  Most of the folks that were on my flight are stuck out in the lobby area of the airport right along with me and my laptop.  Everyone is sleeping all around me, including a 400 pound guy on the floor right behind my chair.  Kind of freaky, but we’re all in the same boat and everyone is just trying to get some shut eye…

Anyway, If the 6am flight goes as planned, I should be in Vegas by 8:45am.  So, I’ll miss the first hour or so of PPC Classroom Live which is drag, but hopefully I won’t miss too much.

I came close to pulling the plug on the whole trip, but I am so close and have gone through so much, It’s hard to turn back now.  It’s not too bad…ok, it sucks! but what are you gonna do?  I’ll just chalk it up to experience and when I start generating the big bucks, It will be a good story to tell.

I’ll sign off for now, it’s 3am, only 1 1/2 hours before I can check back in and get to the gate.  I’ll post an update when I get to Vegas.  If I can make it…..

Finally made it town at 10:00 am Vegas time.  Total time for me traveling? about 12 hours, for a 2 hour flight.  Yikes!  I went straight to the event and was basically wasted all day due to lack of sleep.

Viva Las Vegas

Posted on 30 November 2007 by SonHouse

I’m on my way to Vegas tomorrow to attend the PPC Live event put on by the PPC Classroom guys, Anik Singal and Jeremy Palmer.  I have to admit, I’m pretty pumped up about going and I’m really looking forward to networking.  The one thing about this business is it can be rather lonely as I do not know one person within 60 miles of Austin that does search engine marketing or even that truly gets it.

Case and point, today I was speaking to some of my colleagues at school, I teach elementary health and P.E., and was trying to explain what I do on the side and why I was heading to Las Vegas this weekend.  They listened patiently as I tried to explain, very broadly, how I make money using the internet and search, and all I really got was some blank stares.

I mean, I get pretty excited when I talk about the potential of search marketing and the internet in general but the folks I work with are pretty much career educators and don’t seem to really think of work outside the school district, or at least they don’t talk about it.  I’m basically a serial entrepreneur working a 9 to 5 gig, or 7 to 4 if you work for a school district, and I’m trying to get to a point in my online marketing efforts where I can quit my day job and work for myself.

The harder I work, the closer I get to my goal, and if today is any hint of what the future holds it looks very bright indeed.  I had my first $500 day!!

I hope I don’t blow it in Vegas…..
